We use it if we feel it necessary to our intended meaning to show that the action expressed by the past perfect verb happened before the next action we describe. Note that in sentence 1, you would have to say "he had repaired his car two days earlier/previously/before". You can't use "ago". Ago is used with a past tense and a time expression to count back from the present. If you use a past perfect also called "pluperfect", you are not counting back from the present, but from the time of the associated verb or next action.
